I've mentioned this book before in an older post. Randolph was born in Pittsburg. Kansas. The book was a national best-seller and is considered a classic folklorist work. Some of the entries are from Galena, Kansas, people telling their Ozark tales. "Squib" Qualls of Galena gets a mention. The story behind the title of the book is a hoot.

An excerpt:

1. Pissing in the Snow

Told by Frank Hembree, Galena, Mo., April, 1945. He heard it in the late 1890’s. J.L. Russell, Harrison, Ark., spun me the same yarn in 1950; he says it was told near Green Forest, Ark., about 1885.

One time there was two farmers that lived out on the road to Carico. They was always good friends, and Bill’s oldest boy had been a-sparking one of Sam’s daughters. Everything was going fine till the morning they met down by the creek, and Sam was pretty goddam mad. “Bill,” says he, “from now on I don’t want that boy of yours to set foot on my place.” “Why, what’s he done?” asked the boy’s daddy.“He pissed in the snow, that’s what he done, right in front of my house!”But surely, there ain’t no great harm in that,” Bill says.“No harm!” hollered Sam. “Hell’s fire, he pissed so it spelled Lucy’s name, right there in the snow!”“The boy shouldn’t have done that,” says Bill. “But I don’t see nothing so terrible bad about it.”“Well, by God, I do!” yelled Sam. “There was two sets of tracks! And besides, don’t you think I know my own daughter’s handwriting?”

 MUSIC ROW MAGAZINE -- NASHVILLE

Wake up and unite for a better America. Recognize that it's a fight.

Wednesday, December 28, 2022

Hopping freights, ridin' the sing-song of the rails, the wandering hobo, it's full circle for the legacy of Merle Haggard, the 25 percent of country music's version of Mt. Rushmore, along with Jimmie Rodgers, Bob Wills, and Hank Williams. In addition to the illicit train riders' hobo camps, highway underpasses provided shelter and refuge for the land vagabonds, such as was a young Merle Haggard. A recent Memorial Overpass erected in Haggard's name in Redding, California, though not of museum quality, somehow seems more than fitting for a man who died in his road bus and on his birthday. No better way to sing him back home than an acknowledgement from the rail and asphalt overpasses he traveled so long and the underpasses in his youth that allowed for a welcome retreat.

 Those Bakersfield High Boys...

The booklet, from September 1973

Created by Larry Welz, who later became famous for a character he created named “Cherry Poptart,” and Larry Southerland.

Dark Honey

I knew a girl who lived up in the hills

Her old daddy you know he had him a still

The men would come for miles around

For a jug of what he was putting down

Me though I didn't show for no bootleg shine

I drove those backwoods with somethin' better in mind

That two-bit farm had a lot for a man to like and it all cost money

But what I really liked was some of that free dark honey

That dark honey was secretly mine and for that I give thanks

We sneaked way out back while the men were getting tanked

They didn't notice because they were sloshed to the gills

Drinkin' that swill from her old man's whiskey still

I loved that dark honey for all else I wouldn't give spit

Once you get started you just don't want to ever quit

It's a little bit of heaven though that's just a guess

I've never been to heaven but this couldn't be much less

With that dark honey on the seat next to my side

I coasted my rusty old pickup until it began to glide

That dark honey was never for sale on that rat-bit farm

'Cause that dark honey she's right here with me in my arms

 The fish that got away

 Bakersfield Winds

The direction of the wind has been a-changing

Out West there’s been a lot of rearranging

That Bakersfield sun is still as hot as ever

But there’s been a big change in the weather

All my country music heroes are gone, there’s no doubt

I don’t want to list them all for fear I’d leave someone out

But at the top of the list would be Merle, Buck, and Bill

Bakersfield winds carry their songs to this day still

What was once Bakersfield is gone from me

Gone to Father Time and a long ago history

Bakersfield winds, they're no longer there for me

Bakersfield winds, they carried me to Tennessee

Those Bakersfield winds still sing their songs

In these deep Tennessee hills and I sing along

I can’t forget you my dear old Bakersfield friend

Someday, I’ll ride those Bakersfield winds home again

Old St. Nick?

Galena Sentinel-Times

"I'm not so sure. You got some kind of ID?"

In this Christmas scenario, a little girl in Galena, Kansas, is not convinced that this jolly round man is the real deal.

While in high school and attempting to reach the outside world from my small-town Kansas home I wrote to various baseball players using their team's readily available addresses, asking for the player's photo. Not an autograph as most would ask but a photo. I  received several responses, all autographed, which was an added bonus. Nearly all came as photo postcards. This is my 1959 one sent from Jackie Robinson.

Book Reviews For Author Eileen Sisk's Buck Owens Biography

"Buck was one of the kings of country music but also a complicated man.  This biography tells why."  - Michael Streissguth, author, Johnny Cash: The Biography, "Eileen Sisk's fascinating but unsympathetic bio shreds the veil of secrecy surrounding the brilliant though tormented Owens to reveal a master manipulator with a heart of stone." --John Lomax III, author, Nashville: Music City U.S.A.; Red Desert Sky; and For the Sake of the Song, "[Sisk] has mined the past in a city where others in her trade feared to even shake the timbers."  —Bryce Martin, pioneer country music columnist, Bakersfield Californian, "Detailed and passionate . . . [Sisk] uncovered so many fascinating facts that most writers would simply pass by or not even try to get because it takes work." --Robert Hilburn, former pop music critic and editor for the Los Angeles Times and author, Corn Flakes with John Lennon and Other Tales from a Rock 'n' Roll Life, "Reviewers love the book while hardcore fans find it difficult to learn Owens might have been far less than perfect." --Don Rhodes, veteran music columnist for The Augusta Chronicle and author, SAY IT OUT LOUD!: My Memories of James Brown, Soul Brother No. 1, "This biography should be required reading for any serious country music fan. Meticulously researched, the revealing saga of one of the genre's most flamboyant stars."  —Patsi Bale Cox, author, The Garth Factor: The Career Behind Country's Big Boom; and Nickel Dreams, with Tanya Tucker, "Eileen Sisk captures the real Buck. I knew him. I experienced the weird weaknesses. I witnessed the anger. Eileen is a tremendous writer. She has the guts, she has the 'perfect subject,' and she's overstocked with talent. Her book is dynamite--a masterpiece, a sure-fire winner." --Bill Mack, The Satellite Cowboy, host of theCountry Crossroadsradio and TV shows, "This biography should be required reading for any serious country music fan. Meticulously researched, the revealing saga of one of the genre's most flamboyant stars."

That Oildale Bridge

We were oil and crop field kids built dirt tough

We didn't own much and hardly any fancy stuff

We liked our good times simple and plain

Fun to us was usually daring and seldom tame

Jumpin' off and fishin' along that Oildale Bridge

Were some of the most fun days we ever lived

Us boys and a few of the girls too had our fun

On that concrete bridge under a summer sun

Folks from not around called us River Rats

Because of the place we were raised at

It was the marker for the great divide

Big city Bakersfield was on the other side

Skinny dipping was part of it too

We all had the freedom to choose

Freedom is the best word to describe

What it meant then just to be alive

Those days with the mighty Kern River in flow

Are long gone but we will always recall and know

What it felt like in those hot summer throes

Jumping' in the water wearing no clothes, Ahhh

 SINGIN" IN THE RAIN

Missouri State High School Baseball Champions

Joplin Eagles at Galena today open baseball season

Joplin High School’s state champion baseball Eagles make their season debut weather permitting today, traveling to Galena, Kan., for a 3:30 o'clock game with Howard Mahanes’ Galena Bulldogs. The Eagles, under the direction of new coach John Willingham, boast veterans in only four positions. Sammy Cushman, who saw limited action last year, returns to handle the second base assignment. Don Marrs, the team’ s top lumber will again patrol centerfield. Jim Carpenter, a two year letterman, will work behind the plate, and Lee Mascher again will man the first base post. Other positions on the club however are wide open, according to coach Willingham. Willingham announced Thursday he’ll start right hander Gayle West against Galena. “I plan to let Gayle work at least three innings and probably four,” the Eagle mentor explained. Mike Smith, a stubby right hander will finish. West is a senior while Smith is only a junior. Galena launched its season Thursday afternoon against Riverton. The game was called after seven innings however due to cold weather. Neither team had crossed the plate when action was halted. The game will be completed later. The Bulldogs will send senior right hander Jan Bruce to the hill against Joplin. Bruce, a veteran of Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball is highly regarded by coach Mahanes. “Jan has been throwing the ball real good in practice,” Mahanes commented. “He finished strong last year. I expect great things from him.”

Joplin Globe, March 25, 1960

...

Note: Carpenter and Marrs for Joplin both signed professional baseball contracts, with mixed success in the minor leagues. I remember Baseball Digest magazine writing that Marrs was a “can’t miss." On a windy day Joplin won, 7-1. The following week Galena went to Joplin and lost this time, 11-1. I played first base and had our only hit against "Iron Mike" Smith, a fast-balling right-hander. The '60 Eagles' Warren Turner later enjoyed much success in Joplin as the manager for the college team. Also, Mike Anderson, is the son of former major leaguer Ferrell "Andy" Anderson. Andy (in photo below)

had been a Jackie Robinson teammate with the Dodgers.

 Susan Raye

I could turn to Lawrence Welk and see his girl singer Alice Lon

Or I could switch to Iris Chacon with the Mexican channel on

But the Buck Owens Ranch Show is where the channel falls

That’s where I can see the best looking woman of them all

Susan Raye, Susan Raye

You always make my day

Best looking woman I ever did see

Lord, why don’t you make another two or three

Easily the best-looking woman I ever did see

She sings pretty too, smiling at me on my color teevee

In this old world beauty comes in all forms and degrees

Susan Raye though she beats all the others in a breeze

Susan Raye, Susan Raye

You always make my day

Best looking woman I ever did see

Lord, why don’t you make another two or three

Susan Raye, Susan Raye

You always make my day

Best looking woman I ever did see

Lord, why don’t you make another two or three

 Houdini In Galena

WHEN THE GREAT HOUDINI CAME TO TOWN

EA, B7 EA, B7
1.
He became the world’s greatest showman
On this day a small Kansas town was chosen
Those who followed his path to renown
Recall when the great Houdini came to town

CHO:
E; B7 E; E A; E B7
Those who waited patiently in line
Remember the date, place, and time
The history made by just being around
When the great Houdini came to town

2.
A new skit he wanted to audition
Galena folks saw its first rendition
He let a select few in on the trick
And pulled it off without a hitch

At the Galena Opera house it is said
He messaged words from the dead
Spirits had thrown him into a trance
A mandolin played a slow dance

CHO:
Those who waited patiently in line
Remember the date, place, and time
The history made by just being around
When the great Houdini came to town

Hello, you are looking at an official Rawlings Stotz Little League baseball signed by Mickey Mantle with his vintage 1955 signature. The authenticity is guaranteed and backed by a stamp and letter from JSA. The handwriting on the top panel baseball was written by an unknown hand (probably the Little League player or coach) but the handwriting by Mantle’s Signature was penned in his hand. The story to go along with this baseball is: “Signed at his home in November after the 1955 baseball season and just prior to his winning baseball's rare Triple Crown the next year in 1956. It was signed by Mickey on a Little League baseball during the time Carl Stotz -- the founder of Little League Baseball -- was the league's commissioner. Stotz left that position in November 1955. It was one of a dozen baseballs Mickey signed that day for his former coach, Frank Bruce, who had coached Mickey in the small town of Commerce before leaving for a teaching position in Galena, Kansas, about 15 miles up the road. Bruce at the time of the signing coached a Little League baseball team in Galena that won that city's championship in 1955. Each of the team's players and coaches received one of the baseballs."
