Some of Grandma Martin's sayings about being poor

"I wouldn't call us poor. We're not totally without."
"What we don't have, we probably don't need anyway."
"The Lord will provide. He knows our needs better than we know our needs."
"I'm thankful for what we do have. It's not not much but it's blessed."
"God hears our prayers and acts accordingly, according to his standards."
"Being poor is nothing to be ashamed of."
"We're not hurting. I know of others who are much worse off."
"You can be poor and be proud at the same time."
"We can make do. We somehow always manage."
"Poor is when you have to beg. We've always fell short of that."
"Poor people have poor ways."
"Look on the bright side. The poor have a lot of nothin' to spread around if they get the urge.".

KEN MERRILL IN STUDY HALL LOADING HIS LIGHTER

I caught the sharp whiff of lighter fluid to my right. A glance told me that Ken was about to begin his Zippo maintenance ritual.
He slid the inside from the case. The inside fuel chamber was filled with cotton. He squirted a slow stream of Ronson lighter fluid to soak the cotton. He took a dime and unscrewed the screw holding the flint spring. The flint was worn down. Next, he removed a Ronson flint from a plastic, yellow dispenser and replaced the worn one. He took out the cotton from the fuel chamber and pulled out what was left of the wick. He ran a new wick down a chute and looked at the top to get it the right length. He then deftly stuffed the cotton back in and meshed it in with the wick length. He tamped the cotton lightly with a forefinger. He trimmed the wick, made sure it was all back together and pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped it down. He sat it upright on his desk, in his handkerchief he wrapped the long can of fluid, flint and wick packages, tightened it all up and knotted it together and put the poke in his pocket.
"Now, if I could just light up," he smiled, tamping his pack of Pall Malls upside down on the desk to pack the tobacco tight for a better smoke.
Smokers have a lot more to look forward to on breaks than us non-smokers.
