The eerie Gold Rush ghost town of Bodie is one of eastern California's must-visit sights. It's a boneyard of creaking saloons, burnt-out cars and dusty, deserted pathways – and it has its very own abandoned hotel. The building that would become the Wheaton and Hollis Hotel started life in the 1880s as the United States Land Office.
Verl Lillywhite ended his FB career as head coach for the Burroughs High Burros in Ridgecrest, Calif.
San Francisco 49ers used to pride themselves in having the most versatile football player in the nation in Verl Lillywhite, a product of U.S.C. In four seasons with the San Franciscans 1948-49-50-51 Lillywhite performed capably at left half, right half, fullback, linebacker, defensive half and safety. He departed for the Navy after the '51 campaign. Lillywhite returned to the 49ers in 1956 after four years in the Navy but was released by the team in August.
